The 10 Most Underrated Horror Movies of the 2010s [Bearded Gentlemen Music]

The state of horror in the 2000s, following the post-Scream resurgence, was one full of experimentation. Without it, we may not have seen the undeniable diversity that rose in the decade after. Boundaries were pushed and morals had changed. There was a deeper conversation waiting to happen, and horror was the avenue that many progressive thinkers would take.

Whether or not a decade is better than the last depends on your outlook. Film is very much seen in the same way. Although horror may never get a fair chance in the public eye, there are a number of films that have successfully crossed over the threshold. They’ve gone from obscure to fully recognized, and they’re deemed ‘important’ in the grand scheme. This list of horror titles is not necessarily made for those movies. They have had their time, and, more likely than not, they will continue to be heralded for years and years to come.

Lucifer Society, The Paperback Cover Art of Don Punchatz [Too Much Horror Fiction]

New Jersey-born illustrator Don Ivan Punchatz was born on this date in 1936. His surreal, otherworldly, even whimsical imagery adorned paperback covers in the horror, science fiction, and fantasy genres from all the top publishers: Avon, Signet, Dell, Berkley Medallion, and Warner, as well as for top authors like Asimov and Vonnegut. Especially prolific throughout the late Sixties and Seventies, he worked until the turn of the century and died in 2009. For a complete bio, read his obituary, which made the New York Times.

Here I've collected my favorite Punchatz covers. Enjoy!

SHOCKtober Day 31 [Final Girl Rocks]

Well, this is it pal...end of the line! Boy, depending on intonation that can really sound like a threat, huh? Since this is text, I guess you'll have to figure out for yourself how I meant it.

No matter how I meant it, it is true that today marks SHOCKtober's end. By next week it'll be soft and sagging and browning and leaking. You know, like an expired jack-o-lantern. Will anyone scoop it up and toss it by some far away-ish trees, where it can be eaten and enjoyed by some local animals until its remains return to the soil from whence it came? Or will we all pretend we don't see it in the hopes that someone else will do the scooping? What am I even talking about anymore? Who knows, it's been a long month, okay! It's time for what the French might (don't) call le last favorite character...

Ableism In Horror [Gory Cory]

Horror loves to tell disability narratives. I covered some of this in my “Visibly Different Villains” piece about how many villains are scarred or disfigured. I wanted to cover ableism in horror, however, because it’s also a hugely prevalent problem plaguing the genre today.

Godzilla, The Ultimate Illustrated Guide Book Review by Joseph [The Scariest Things]

Medusa, A Failed Feminist Look at Evangelical Extremism [Horror Homeroom]

What’s scary about Anita Rocha da Silveira’s second feature is neither its monstrous metaphors for the Evangelical extremism on the rise in her native Brazil, nor its Argento-esque aesthetic of hallucinogenic hues and contrast colors. It’s how the ignorant ideology which the sprawling story overtly criticizes asserts itself in the subtext of this supposedly feminist fairytale. Like many fairytales, it revolves around a haughty heroine humbled by losing her beauty and being thrown off her privileged pedestal. Excluded by her previous peers and having of necessity to engage in lowly work, her character becomes reformed so that when she regains her physical charms they are matched by spiritual perfection.

We Spent 3 Nights in a Haunted Hotel Room [The Horror Movies Blog]

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, we spent the weekend in a hotel room considered by many to be the most haunted hotel room in the country.

The room is in the Marshall House in Savannah, Georgia — ranked as the most Haunted City in the USA, and the Marshall House as Savannah’s most haunted hotel.

It’s room 414. And we stayed there for three nights.

Thanks for the Nightmares, Chucky [The Superghoul]

I give my dad a lot of credit for getting me into horror because he and his squadron put together haunted houses every October and one year, I dared to enter. It’d be an incorrect assessment to make that my love of horror wasn’t seeded elsewhere. It goes back, years before I walked into my first haunted house as a pre-teen.

Rise of the Zuni Fetish Doll, A Brief History of Trilogy of Terror’s Scariest Entry [Nightmare Nostalgia]

When I was a young kid, I remember walking down the hall late one night to the kitchen to grab a drink and while passing by our living room area, my parents were watching some late-night movie. I paused for a minute in curiosity and what I saw gave me nightmares for DAYS. This poor lady screaming for life while some psychotic tiny doll- thing with about 100 teeth chased her around her bedroom wielding the tiniest knife I had ever did see. Upon discovering the midnight-child invasion of the parental movie night, I was squawked at to get back to bed but the visionary terror I had witnessed on the Magnavox screen was clear as day. For years, until I was old enough to ride my bike to the video store on my own, the image haunted me until I was able to remedy it with a full viewing, and when I finally did around the tender age of eleven, Trilogy Of Terror became a tried and true favorite of mine that I would revisit many times; my go-to especially on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Friday 13 Movies Special – The Jason Voorhees Saga [El Primo de Ridley Scott]

Without a doubt we all know that number 13 is associated with bad luck, the most negative superstition and the bad omen. Extreme fear of number 13 is called triscadecaphobia. We can get an idea with some examples such as that 13 were the people who were at the last supper with Jesus Christ, 13 are the evil spirits of the Jewish Kabbalah, 13 is the number representing Loki in Scandinavian mythology, in the Tarot it is the death number and we all know what happened to NASA's Apollo 13 mission. But if we also put it together on the 13th with the fifth day of the week, Friday, things take another turn. And is that the Friday 13It is a day considered bad luck in most western cultures ( in Spain, instead we changed it to Tuesday 13 ). This belief dates back to Friday, October 13, 1307, which is when a group of Templar knights were executed by the Inquisition under the orders of Philip IV of France.

A History of Horror [Realm of Horror]

A look at the history of horror cinema.

"Fear is the most powerful emotion in the human race and fear of the unknown is probably the most ancient. You're dealing with stuff that everybody has felt; from being little babies we're frightened of the dark, we're frightened of the unknown. If you're making a horror film you get to play with the audiences feelings" – John Carpenter : Director, Halloween

Cannibal Holocaust and the Savage Cinema of Ruggero Deodato [The Bedlam Files]

This volume, compiled by FAB Press founder Harvey Fenton, is (as of early 2023) the only English language book dedicated solely to the late Italian filmmaker Ruggero Deodato. At just 111 pages (144 in the revised edition) it’s not especially wide-ranging or in-depth, although in truth there’s really not much in-depth information to be had on Deodato, a talented craftsman rather than an auteur.
