A Love Letter to the Labels We Used to Ignore

If you grew up during the golden age of VHS, you probably remember the movies.

You remember the giant clamshell cases. You remember wandering through video stores looking for something to watch on a Friday night. You remember spending twenty minutes arguing with your friends about whether a movie you'd never heard of was actually going to be any good.

But there's another part of the VHS experience that deserves a little more love:

The stickers.

Lots and lots of stickers.

If you have a collection of vintage VHS tapes, you've probably noticed that the little labels slapped onto those tapes were almost as much a part of the experience as the movies themselves. And, in many cases, those stickers tell us exactly where a tape came from, how many people rented it, and how many times somebody ignored the giant PLEASE REWIND warning.

There are two kinds of people in this world.

People who walk through an art gallery and quietly whisper, "Hmm... the use of color is fascinating."

And people who see a demon riding a flaming dragon while wielding an axe made of human skulls and immediately think, "That would look amazing on my living room wall."

Let's face it. Some of the greatest horror artwork ever created isn't hanging in museums or decorating haunted attractions.

It's on heavy metal album covers.

Seriously.

Heavy metal artists have spent decades painting things that make horror fans drool. Need a haunted castle? Done. Zombie apocalypse? Easy. Ancient cosmic horror? Tuesday afternoon. Satan playing chess against Death while a werewolf eats a priest? That's just the limited-edition vinyl variant.

Meanwhile, the rest of the art world is busy painting fruit bowls.

There are great horror posters… and then there’s the poster for Friday the 13th, which looks like it was designed by a man who drank six cups of coffee, stared into the woods for three hours, and whispered, “What if silhouettes were terrifying?”

First of all, this poster understands something modern horror marketing forgot: mystery is scary. You don’t see a hockey mask. You don’t see twelve explosions. Nobody is standing back-to-back holding weapons like they’re auditioning for a haunted Avengers movie. It’s just a giant shadow figure staring at terrified camp counselors like he’s deciding which one forgot to bring marshmallows.

The silhouette design was created by designer Spiros Angelikas, while the final illustrated poster was painted by artist Alex Ebel.
