What Exactly Are the Risers?
If you've ever wondered what the title actually means, the risers are part of the parachute system.
They are the straps connecting the parachute's suspension lines to the harness.
And, naturally, they're not mentioned in the song because they're particularly pleasant.
They're mentioned because things go spectacularly wrong.
The parachute and its associated lines become tangled with the falling paratrooper, turning the equipment that was supposed to save his life into part of the disaster.
The song takes this frightening possibility and transforms it into grotesque poetry.
That's one of the reasons “Blood on the Risers” works so well as dark horror storytelling.
