The Song Doesn't Just Describe Death — It Gets Gruesome
This is where “Blood on the Risers” separates itself from most traditional military songs.
It doesn't politely imply that the rookie has died.
It describes the aftermath.
Different versions of the song contain different verses, but the traditional versions become progressively more graphic, describing blood, body parts, the parachute and the unfortunate condition of the jumper after impact.
That's where the song's horror really comes alive.
The structure is almost like a miniature horror story:
Introduction:
A frightened rookie prepares for his first jump.
Rising tension:
Something goes wrong with his equipment.
Panic:
He realizes he's falling.
False hope:
He attempts to deploy his reserve.
Catastrophe:
The parachute system becomes entangled.
Finale:
Gravity wins.
Post-credits scene:
Everybody has to clean up.
It's basically a three-minute airborne splatter movie.
