Why It Works as Horror
Strip away the military context for a moment and “Blood on the Risers” has nearly every ingredient of a classic horror story.
There's an inexperienced protagonist.
There's an extremely dangerous environment.
There's a seemingly routine activity that suddenly becomes deadly.
There's a technical failure.
There's helplessness.
There's escalating dread.
There's a gruesome death.
And there's a final punchline delivered by people who have apparently seen this kind of thing before.
The biggest difference between “Blood on the Risers” and a conventional horror movie is that the monster isn't a vampire, demon, killer clown or supernatural entity.
It's gravity.
And gravity has a pretty impressive kill count.
