Bloober Team
Bloober Team

Let's be honest. Most horror games try to scare you with monsters.

Bloober Team tries to scare you with... architecture.

Sure, there are monsters. There are ghosts. There are things with far too many teeth. But somehow the most terrifying thing in a Bloober Team game is opening a door, walking down a hallway, turning around, and discovering the hallway has filed for divorce and moved to another dimension.

Founded in 2008 in Kraków, Poland, Bloober Team has grown into one of the biggest names in psychological horror. They've mastered the art of making players question reality, their own sanity, and whether buying a house with good lighting was the correct life decision.

Let's take a trip through every major game they've created. Just don't expect the exits to stay where you left them.

Before the Nightmares

Every legendary horror developer has an origin story.

Batman had crime.

Spider-Man had radioactive spiders.

Bloober Team had...

a menA-Men (2012)

Believe it or not, the studio that would eventually remake Silent Hill 2 started with a military-themed puzzle strategy platformer.

No haunted paintings.

No psychological trauma.

No walls made of screaming flesh.

Just little soldiers solving puzzles.

It's adorable.

Looking back, it's like discovering Stephen King's first novel was about gardening.

BRAWL (2015)

Next came BRAWL, a frantic multiplayer action game.

Imagine Bomberman after drinking six energy drinks while listening to heavy metal.

Explosions.

Chaos.

Broken friendships.

Still somehow less stressful than one hallway in Layers of Fear.

Then Everything Got Weird...

Around 2016, someone at Bloober Team apparently asked:

"What if we made games that emotionally damaged people?"

The answer was...

"YES."

layers of fearLayers of Fear (2016)

This was the game that put Bloober Team on the horror map.

You play as a painter descending into madness while exploring one of gaming's most haunted houses.

Calling it a haunted house doesn't quite do it justice.

This house actively hates interior design.

Paintings melt.

Doors disappear.

Rooms rearrange themselves.

Furniture teleports because apparently physics took the day off.

You'll spend the first hour saying...

"Wait...wasn't the kitchen over there?"

By hour three you're saying...

"You know what? Maybe the kitchen never existed."

That's psychological horror done right.

Layers of Fear: Inheritance (2016)

Instead of simply adding more levels, Bloober created an expansion that lets players experience the mansion through the eyes of the painter's daughter.

It's smaller in scope but adds emotional depth to the original story.

Also...

The house somehow became even creepier.

Which is honestly impressive.

observerObserver (2017)

Now THIS is one of Bloober's masterpieces.

Set in a cyberpunk future, you play Detective Daniel Lazarski, voiced by the legendary Rutger Hauer.

Your job?

Hack directly into people's minds.

Turns out...

People have really disturbing dreams.

Who knew?

Observer combines cyberpunk, detective work, body horror, psychological horror, and enough disturbing imagery to make your graphics card consider early retirement.

It's basically Blade Runner after several years of therapy...that didn't work.

Layers of Fear VR: Solitude (2019)

Someone at Bloober apparently wondered...

"You know what would make this haunted mansion worse?"

"Actually standing inside it."

Thus, Layers of Fear VR was born.

The original game already had players jumping every few minutes.

Now your expensive VR headset gets to witness your panic attacks in glorious first person.

Hope you tightened those headset straps.

blair witchBlair Witch (2019)

Most people go hiking because they enjoy nature.

Bloober Team believes hiking should involve psychological torment.

Based on the legendary film, Blair Witch follows Ellis as he searches the Black Hills Forest alongside the goodest boy in horror gaming...

Bullet.

Bullet deserves every treat.

Every single one.

He's brave.

He's loyal.

And unlike you, he usually knows when something terrifying is about to happen.

The forest twists reality, time refuses to cooperate, and you'll quickly discover that GPS doesn't work when evil witches are involved.

Layers of Fear 2 (2019)

Apparently one haunted house wasn't enough.

Now you're trapped aboard an abandoned ocean liner.

Because everyone knows cruise ships become 300% creepier the moment all the passengers disappear.

The game explores identity, acting, obsession, and the terrifying realization that mannequins are absolutely not your friends.

Ever.

Observer: System Redux (2020)

Bloober didn't just remaster Observer.

They upgraded it into Observer: System Redux, adding enhanced visuals, new gameplay, and additional story content.

It's the same nightmare...

Only prettier.

And somehow prettier nightmares are even more disturbing.

the mediumThe Medium (2021)

If Bloober Team had a résumé, The Medium would be near the top.

You play as Marianne, a medium capable of existing in both the real world and the spirit world simultaneously.

The game's split-screen mechanic lets players explore both realities at once.

Your brain will constantly be asking...

"Which horrifying dimension am I supposed to be afraid of?"

The answer?

Both.

Special mention goes to Akira Yamaoka's haunting soundtrack, proving once again that silence is terrifying...

But creepy music makes everything worse.

Layers of Fear (2023)

Instead of simply remastering the earlier games, Bloober rebuilt the entire experience using Unreal Engine 5.

The result is part remake...

Part sequel...

Part definitive edition...

And entirely dedicated to making sure you never trust another hallway.

It's gorgeous.

It's unsettling.

It's another reminder that painters should probably seek therapy before buying enormous Victorian mansions.

silent hill 2 remake

Silent Hill 2 (2024)

Then came the announcement that made horror fans collectively lose their minds.

Bloober Team was remaking Silent Hill 2.

The internet immediately responded with...

"Please don't mess this up."

No pressure.

After years of anticipation, Bloober delivered one of the most critically praised horror remakes in recent memory.

They respected the original while modernizing combat, visuals, exploration, and storytelling for a new generation.

Watching the internet go from...

"We're doomed."

to...

"...Okay, that was fantastic."

...was almost as satisfying as playing the game itself.

Almost.

cronos the new dawn

Cronos: The New Dawn (2025)

After proving themselves with Silent Hill 2, Bloober introduced a brand-new original universe with Cronos: The New Dawn.

This isn't just another haunted house.

It's survival horror mixed with science fiction, time travel, body horror, and creatures that look like someone spilled nightmare fuel onto an alien biology textbook.

The atmosphere is phenomenal.

The monsters are grotesque.

And once again, Bloober proves they can make players uncomfortable without relying solely on cheap jump scares.

Although...

They still throw in a few just to keep your heartbeat interesting.

The Secret Bloober Formula

Every Bloober Team game contains at least four of the following ingredients:

✔ One emotionally damaged protagonist.

✔ A building that refuses to obey the laws of physics.

✔ Doors that relocate themselves for comedy.

✔ Disturbing audio that convinces you something is behind you.

✔ Symbolism so deep you'll still be reading fan theories three weeks later.

✔ Monsters that clearly skipped several anatomy classes.

✔ One moment where you quietly whisper...

"Nope."

...right before walking into the room anyway.

Why Horror Fans Love Bloober Team

What makes Bloober Team special isn't just that they make scary games.

Lots of developers make scary games.

Bloober specializes in psychological horror.

Their games linger.

They leave you thinking about symbolism.

About grief.

About guilt.

About trauma.

About why every abandoned building apparently has terrible lighting.

They understand that the scariest monster isn't always chasing you.

Sometimes...

It's your own memories.

...

Okay.

And sometimes it's also a giant flesh monster screaming at you.

Let's not undersell the giant flesh monsters.

Final Thoughts

From humble beginnings with A-Men to reimagining one of horror's greatest classics and creating unforgettable originals like Observer, The Medium, and Cronos: The New Dawn, Bloober Team has earned its place among horror gaming's elite.

Their games don't simply ask you to survive.

They ask you to question reality.

To confront your fears.

To solve mysteries.

And occasionally...

To remember where the hallway went.

If you're a horror fan who enjoys psychological storytelling, incredible atmosphere, and environments that behave like they were designed by a haunted Rubik's Cube, Bloober Team should absolutely be on your radar.

Just remember one important rule before starting any of their games:

If a door suddenly appears where there wasn't one before...

Maybe don't open it.

Then again...

You know you're going to.
