Honorable Mentions
Obviously, creating a list of only ten Lovecraftian games is borderline cruel.
There are too many excellent candidates.
Some games that narrowly missed the list include:
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened
Sherlock Holmes investigating the Cthulhu Mythos sounds like a ridiculous combination.
It is.
It also works surprisingly well.
Darkwood
Darkwood combines survival horror, psychological terror and a bizarre, hostile world where reality itself seems increasingly unreliable. The developers describe it as a top-down survival horror game with an open world, procedural elements and an atmosphere designed to blur the line between reality and nightmare.
Moons of Madness
A science-fiction approach to Lovecraftian horror that demonstrates that cosmic horror doesn't need to happen in a creepy 1920s fishing village.
Sometimes the universe can ruin your life from space.
Cultist Simulator
This one takes the forbidden-knowledge aspect of Lovecraftian horror and turns it into a game about occult mysteries, secret societies and discovering things that probably should have remained undiscovered.
Still Wakes the Deep
A terrifying example of cosmic horror transplanted into an offshore oil rig.
Because apparently oil rigs weren't already terrifying enough.
