5. Call of Cthulhu

Finally, a detective who realizes something is horribly wrong—and keeps investigating anyway

Cyanide's Call of Cthulhu, released in 2018, gives players a proper interactive trip into the Cthulhu Mythos.

You play Edward Pierce, a private investigator sent to investigate the mysterious deaths of an artist and her family.

This takes you to Darkwater Island.

And if horror movies have taught us anything, it's that mysterious islands are never good.

Pierce's investigation leads him into cults, supernatural mysteries, disturbing visions and increasingly bizarre discoveries.

The game also incorporates skills and investigation mechanics, meaning that how you approach certain situations can affect what you discover.

Perhaps most importantly, it captures the feeling of slowly losing your grip on reality.

That's essential to Lovecraftian horror.

The scariest moment isn't necessarily when the monster appears.

It's when you start wondering whether the monster was ever real.

Or whether you are.

Why it's Lovecraftian: It's literally based around the Cthulhu Mythos and combines investigation, supernatural horror, insanity and forbidden knowledge.
