#6 Read an Indie Horror Author
Now move beyond the classics.
Find someone you've never heard of.
Look at independent authors publishing horror through small presses, self-publishing platforms and their own websites.
Try indie horror anthologies.
Try short-story collections.
Try novellas.
Try independent serial fiction.
And don't underestimate short stories.
You can read one before bed.
Which is probably a terrible idea.
But that's your problem.
The great thing about independent writers is that they aren't necessarily restricted to the familiar horror formulas.
You might encounter cosmic horror.
Body horror.
Folk horror.
Extreme horror.
Weird fiction.
Psychological horror.
Experimental horror.
Or something that doesn't fit into any category because the author apparently decided categories were boring.
Excellent.
