4. The Last House on the Left (1972)
Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left is another film where the rawness is part of the experience.
It isn't elegant.
It isn't particularly comfortable.
And that's exactly the point.
The film comes from an era of exploitation filmmaking where movies could be deliberately confrontational and weren't necessarily interested in making the audience feel comfortable.
A modern production could recreate the basic story.
It could even make it considerably more graphic.
But recreating the particular combination of low-budget filmmaking, uncomfortable performances, bleakness and early-'70s exploitation sensibility would be difficult.
You'd probably end up with a much slicker movie.
And sometimes slickness is the enemy of sleaze.
