6. Pink Flamingos (1972)
John Waters apparently looked at conventional cinema and thought:
“No. We need to make this considerably weirder.”
Pink Flamingos isn't simply a movie.
It's an endurance test.
It's an underground-cinema grenade thrown directly at the concept of good taste.
Trying to remake it today would be fascinating because the original's shock value came from its complete lack of interest in behaving like a normal movie.
The question wouldn't be whether modern technology could reproduce it.
Of course it could.
The question would be whether anyone could reproduce the specific brand of insanity that John Waters and his cast created.
Probably not.
And if somebody tried, John Waters would probably be the first person we'd want to ask whether they succeeded.
