7. Faces of Death (1978)
Faces of Death occupies an unusual place in horror history because its reputation became almost as important as the movie itself.
The film presented supposedly real footage alongside staged material, creating an unsettling question for viewers:
“Am I actually watching this?”
That question was incredibly powerful in the pre-internet era.
Today, audiences are much more accustomed to manipulated media. Fake videos, special effects, practical effects and digital effects are everywhere.
A modern version would have to work considerably harder to create that same uncertainty.
And there's another problem.
The original became infamous partly because viewers debated what was real and what wasn't.
In the modern age, somebody would probably answer the question on social media before you've even finished watching the opening credits.
