From survival horror classics to gloriously ridiculous disasters, these movies prove that sometimes the scariest thing in a video game adaptation is Hollywood.
For decades, Hollywood had a problem.
Actually, Hollywood had several problems.
But one of the biggest was apparently figuring out how to turn a horror video game into a horror movie without accidentally removing all the horror.
Video games and movies tell stories very differently. A game can make you wander through an abandoned mansion for six hours, pick up a typewriter ribbon, solve a puzzle involving three statues and then spend twenty minutes wondering why the developers hid ammunition in a toilet.
A movie has approximately two hours.
Consequently, filmmakers have occasionally looked at a beloved horror game and thought:
“Let's take everything people loved about it and do something completely different.”
And thus, the horror video game adaptation was born.
The results have ranged from genuinely excellent to spectacularly awful. We've had atmospheric psychological horror, zombie action movies, supernatural mysteries, vampire nonsense, demonic possession, killer animatronics and at least one film that appears to have been made after somebody found a House of the Dead instruction manual in a dumpster.
Yet there have also been some genuine successes.
Silent Hill captured the nightmarish atmosphere of its source material. Resident Evil became a massive cinematic franchise. Five Nights at Freddy's demonstrated the extraordinary power of an internet-born horror phenomenon. Werewolves Within proved that even a multiplayer social-deduction game could become a surprisingly effective horror comedy.
And now, in 2026, we're living through another interesting period for the genre, with new adaptations such as Resident Evil, Return to Silent Hill and The Mortuary Assistant arriving on screens.
So grab some popcorn.
Turn off the lights.
Make sure the doors are locked.
And whatever you do, don't save your game over the only save file.
Here are 25 horror video game movie adaptations worth talking about.
