There are certain pieces of movie trivia that sound completely fake.
Henry Cavill was in a Hellraiser movie.
Not a new Hellraiser movie. Not a proposed reboot. Not some fan film where somebody digitally pasted Superman into the Leviathan logo.
We're talking about 2005's Hellraiser: Hellworld—the eighth movie in the Hellraiser franchise, a direct-to-DVD horror sequel featuring Doug Bradley as Pinhead, Lance Henriksen as the mysterious Host, and a very young Henry Cavill as a character named Mike.
Yes.
Superman spent some time hanging out with Pinhead.
And somehow, this is real.
The Superman Before Superman
Today, Henry Cavill is best known for playing Superman in the DC films, Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes, and generally looking like someone who was genetically engineered in a laboratory to make the rest of us feel inadequate.
But back in 2002, Cavill was still a young actor trying to build his résumé.
That's when he filmed Hellraiser: Hellworld in Romania.
The movie wouldn't actually be released until 2005, meaning audiences got to see Cavill years before he became a major Hollywood star. He was credited as Mike, one of the young characters caught up in the film's bizarre mixture of online gaming, parties, hallucinations and Cenobite-related unpleasantness.
And if you're wondering how old Cavill was when this happened, he was only about 19 years old during filming.
Which means that somewhere in the universe there exists a timeline where the future Superman's big early career challenge was not fighting General Zod.
It was surviving Hellraiser: Hellworld.
What Exactly Is Hellworld?
Released in 2005, Hellraiser: Hellworld is the eighth installment in the franchise and was directed by Rick Bota.
The premise is wonderfully early-2000s.
A group of young people are obsessed with an online multiplayer game called Hellworld, which is based on the Hellraiser mythology.
Because apparently the natural progression of Hellraiser was:
Ancient puzzle box → Cenobites → eternal damnation → MMORPG.
The group attends a Hellworld-themed party hosted by the mysterious Host, played by legendary genre actor Lance Henriksen.
Things predictably go wrong.
Very wrong.
The movie mixes the Hellraiser mythology with the sort of technology that seemed incredibly futuristic in the early 2000s. Online gaming, secret parties and people being unable to tell whether what they're experiencing is real all become part of the story.
And then, because this is Hellraiser, Pinhead eventually shows up to remind everybody that getting addicted to video games is apparently the least of their problems.
And Then There's Henry Cavill
Cavill plays Mike, one of the young people attending the Hellworld party.
He's sharing the screen with a surprisingly interesting collection of genre talent.
There's Katheryn Winnick, who plays Chelsea. There's Khary Payton, who plays Derrick. There's Christopher Jacot as Jake.
And then you've got Lance Henriksen.
And Doug Bradley.
And somewhere in the middle of all this is a 19-year-old Henry Cavill.
Looking back at the movie today is almost like watching an alternate-universe Hollywood history lesson.
You can point at the screen and say:
"Hey! That's Superman!"
Then:
"That's Pinhead!"
Then:
"That's Lance Henriksen!"
And eventually your brain starts wondering if someone accidentally opened a celebrity portal.
The Weirdest Part: Cavill Wasn't Superman Yet

Because Hellworld doesn't exactly feel like a traditional Hellraiser story.
Instead of focusing heavily on the mythology established by Clive Barker's original films, it takes the franchise into the wonderfully bizarre world of:
"What if Pinhead had a fan club?"
The characters are obsessed with a fictional online game based on the Cenobites.
That's an absolutely ridiculous premise.
And yet, in 2005, it was probably a pretty clever way to connect Hellraiser with the rapidly expanding world of online gaming.
Today, we wouldn't blink at the idea.
Back then, however, the idea of an online Hellraiser game felt like something you'd discover on a shady website after clicking on approximately fourteen pop-up advertisements.
The Great Horror Franchise Tradition of Finding Future Stars
Cavill's appearance also puts Hellworld into a long and proud horror tradition.
Horror movies have been launching careers, or at least providing fascinating early appearances, for decades.
Actors who eventually became huge stars have turned up in obscure slashers, creature features, television horror and direct-to-video sequels.
Sometimes they're barely recognizable.
Sometimes they're the best part of the movie.
And occasionally you get the ultimate trivia jackpot:
Future Superman plays a guy named Mike in a Hellraiser sequel.
That's hard to beat.
It also makes you wonder what the casting director thought.
"Okay, we need a young actor."
"How about Henry Cavill?"
"Who?"
"Trust me."
Imagine the Alternate Universe
Let's have some fun with this.
Imagine an alternate universe where Hellraiser: Hellworld becomes an enormous hit.
Henry Cavill becomes famous for playing Mike.
Instead of Superman, Hollywood offers him increasingly elaborate horror roles.

"Why didn't they just use the original Pinhead?"

Hellworld was filmed alongside Hellraiser: Deader in Romania as part of the production strategy surrounding the eighth and ninth entries in the franchise. Both productions were shot during the early 2000s, with Hellworld eventually arriving on DVD in 2005.
That means the movie belongs to a fascinating period in Hellraiser history.
The franchise was increasingly exploring different concepts and formats, sometimes using the Hellraiser name to give previously unrelated material a connection to the established mythology.
And buried inside that strange era is one of the most entertaining pieces of casting trivia in the entire series.

So Is Hellworld Worth Watching?
Here's where things get subjective.
If you're looking for another Hellraiser movie that captures the atmosphere and mythology of the first two films, Hellworld probably isn't going to scratch that particular itch.
But if you're a horror fan who enjoys bizarre franchise history, obscure sequels and spotting actors before they became famous?
Absolutely.
It's essentially a cinematic time capsule.
You get:
- Doug Bradley as Pinhead.
- Lance Henriksen doing Lance Henriksen things.
- Katheryn Winnick before Vikings.
- Khary Payton before becoming widely known as Cyborg and other major roles.
- A very young Henry Cavill.
- A ridiculous early-2000s online-gaming premise.
- A Hellraiser movie that feels like it wandered into a completely different horror franchise and forgot to leave.
And that's precisely why it's interesting.
The Ultimate "I Know That Guy!" Horror Movie
The next time you're watching Hellworld and Henry Cavill appears on screen, resist the urge to yell:
"SUPERMAN!"
Although, let's be honest, that's probably impossible.
Because once you've seen him in the movie, you can't unsee it.
There's young Henry Cavill, years before the blue suit and red cape, wandering around a Hellraiser movie while Pinhead is busy doing what Pinhead does best.
It's one of those wonderfully strange pieces of movie history that makes horror so much fun.
The genre is full of forgotten movies.
It's full of strange sequels.
It's full of questionable fashion choices.
It's full of actors who went on to become famous.
And occasionally, it's full of Superman getting invited to a Cenobite party.
So if you've never seen Hellraiser: Hellworld, give it a shot.
Not necessarily because it's the greatest Hellraiser movie ever made.
But because somewhere between the Cenobites, the online gaming, Lance Henriksen and the questionable early-2000s party aesthetic is a fascinating little time capsule containing one of Hollywood's future biggest stars.
Before Henry Cavill was Superman, he went to Hell.
And apparently, he brought a DVD player.
