Why These Movies Still Work
It's easy to look at the technology in Screamers and recognize that some of it feels very 1990s.
It's equally easy to look at the practical effects in The Thing and realize how much filmmaking technology has changed since 1982.
But neither movie depends on technological realism to remain frightening.
Their core idea is timeless.
We are social creatures.
We need other people.
We depend upon trust.
And if something destroys that trust, our entire understanding of the world can collapse.
That's why The Thing remains one of the greatest paranoid horror movies ever made.
And that's why Screamers deserves considerably more attention from horror fans.
