That's ultimately the question both movies force upon us.
Who do you trust when you have no way of knowing the truth?
In normal life, we rely on countless assumptions.
We assume our friends are who they say they are.
We assume strangers are human.
We assume the person helping us isn't secretly an autonomous killing machine.
You know.
The basics.
Horror movies like The Thing and Screamers take those assumptions away.
They create worlds where your senses can't necessarily be trusted.
A familiar face might be an enemy.
A frightened child might be a weapon.
Your closest friend might be something else entirely.
And once that possibility enters your mind, it's almost impossible to get rid of it.
