15. The Horror Movie Rulebook

The greatest horror trope of all may actually be the fact that horror characters seem to live in a completely different universe from the rest of us.

In their world:

  • Flashlights have batteries for exactly 90 seconds.
  • Doors never lock properly.
  • Cars always fail at the worst possible moment.
  • Nobody believes the protagonist.
  • Cell phones mysteriously stop working.
  • Basements are mandatory.
  • Attics contain ancient evil.
  • Children know too much.
  • Pets sense supernatural entities.
  • And every creepy noise must be investigated immediately.

And honestly?

We wouldn't have it any other way.

Because horror tropes aren't necessarily flaws.

They're traditions.

They're the familiar ingredients that make the genre feel like home — assuming, of course, that your home isn't haunted, your basement isn't occupied by a murderous clown, and your new neighbor isn't secretly a serial killer.

Which brings us to the most important horror trope of all:

The audience yelling at the screen because the character is doing something unbelievably stupid.

"DON'T GO DOWNSTAIRS!"

"DON'T OPEN THAT DOOR!"

"DON'T TOUCH THAT!"

"WHY ARE YOU SPLITTING UP?!"

And yet, when the movie ends, we immediately press play on another one.

Because deep down, horror fans don't want horror movies to stop using these tropes.

We just want the characters to use them slightly more intelligently.
