Friday the 13th Timeline
Friday the 13th Timeline

There are horror movie timelines...

There are complicated horror movie timelines...

And then there's Friday the 13th, a franchise that looked at the concept of continuity, laughed hysterically, grabbed a machete, and buried it somewhere in Crystal Lake.

Trying to explain the Friday the 13th timeline is like trying to untangle Christmas lights while someone repeatedly throws hockey masks at your face. But don't worry—we've done the impossible so you don't have to.

Welcome to Camp Confusion.

1957 - It All Starts With a Bad Day at Summer Camp

Little Jason Voorhees, who has severe facial deformities, supposedly drowns in Crystal Lake because the camp counselors are... let's just say... extremely distracted.

His mother, Pamela Voorhees, understandably does not receive the Camp Counselor of the Year Award.

Instead, she begins murdering people connected with the camp.

Healthy? No.

Iconic? Absolutely.

1980 - Friday the 13th

Pamela spends the entire movie chopping up counselors before finally losing her own head.

Literally.

At the very end, Alice is pulled into the lake by a child version of Jason... or maybe it's a dream...

The franchise immediately starts asking questions it has no intention of answering.

1984 - Friday the 13th Parts 2, 3 & The Final Chapter

Here's where things get delightfully ridiculous.

Parts 2, 3 and 4 all happen over just a few days.

Jason:

  • Finds a sack to wear.
  • Upgrades to his famous hockey mask.
  • Kills approximately half the population of New Jersey.
  • Gets hit with axes.
  • Gets stabbed.
  • Gets shot.
  • Gets hacked apart by Tommy Jarvis.

All before most people have finished their long weekend.

Imagine explaining that insurance claim.

Jason's Wardrobe Evolution

Timeline:

  • Burlap sack.
  • One-eyed sack.
  • Hockey mask.
  • Slightly damaged hockey mask.
  • More damaged hockey mask.
  • Even MORE damaged hockey mask.

The hockey mask ages more consistently than the actual timeline.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning

Jason is dead.

Seriously.

No tricks.

No resurrections.

Instead, someone decides to become a copycat Jason because apparently therapy wasn't available in the 1980s.

Fans were... not thrilled.

Jason Lives

Tommy Jarvis visits Jason's grave...

...because that's always a smart idea.

He accidentally strikes Jason with a metal fence during a lightning storm.

Lightning hits.

Jason comes back as an unstoppable zombie.

Congratulations, Tommy.

You invented Horror Frankenstein.

Zombie Jason would remain the franchise's best version of the character for years.

The Zombie Years

Jason spends several movies proving that death is more of a suggestion than an actual condition.

Part VII

Jason fights a telekinetic teenager.

Yes.

The franchise basically said:

"What if Carrie fought Jason?"

Nobody objected.

Part VIII

Jason somehow leaves Crystal Lake...

...gets on a cruise ship...

...travels to New York...

...and spends about twelve minutes actually in Manhattan.

Marketing departments remain undefeated.

Jason Goes to Hell

Now things become absolutely unhinged.

Jason melts.

His evil spirit possesses people.

Magic daggers suddenly exist.

There's an ancient family curse.

People start talking about demons.

Somewhere a screenwriter whispered:

"What if absolutely nothing made sense?"

Jason X

Earth has had enough.

So humanity launches Jason into space.

Naturally.

After being frozen for hundreds of years, Jason wakes up aboard a spaceship where futuristic scientists accidentally upgrade him into Uber Jason.

Because if regular Jason wasn't hard enough to kill...

...let's make him chrome.

Freddy vs. Jason

Jason ends up in Hell.

Freddy Krueger manipulates him into returning to Earth.

The result?

One of horror's greatest heavyweight championship matches.

Did Freddy win?

Did Jason win?

The real winner was anyone who bought popcorn.

The 2009 Reboot

The reboot simplifies things...

...for about five minutes.

This Jason is smarter.

Faster.

Uses underground tunnels.

Sets traps.

Actually runs.

Which caused horror fans everywhere to shout:

"WAIT! HE CAN RUN?"

Apparently yes.

Very well.

So... What's The Actual Timeline?

If you're watching in release order:

Friday the 13th (1980)
Friday the 13th Part 2
Friday the 13th Part III
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
Jason Goes to Hell
Jason X
Freddy vs. Jason
Friday the 13th (2009 Reboot)

Thankfully, only the 2009 movie exists in its own separate continuity.

Everything else somehow... technically... fits together.

Even if it occasionally requires suspension of disbelief roughly the size of Crystal Lake.

Wait... How Old Is Jason?

Excellent question.

Nobody knows.

Not even Jason.

Depending on the movie, he's anywhere from his twenties to approximately 600 years old.

Time works differently when you're undead.

Final Thoughts

The Friday the 13th timeline isn't something you solve.

It's something you survive.

It ignores calendars.

It laughs at continuity.

It occasionally forgets who's alive.

And somehow...

...that's part of its charm.

Because no matter how confusing the timeline becomes, one thing never changes.

If you hear "Ki ki ki... ma ma ma..."

Run.

Don't ask questions.

Don't stop for snacks.

And definitely don't volunteer to be a camp counselor.

Jason's calendar is always open.
