3. The Terminator (1984) — Skynet
Technically, The Terminator is a science-fiction action movie.
But let's be honest.
A nearly unstoppable machine from the future hunting down a woman because an artificial intelligence wants her dead?
That's horror.
Skynet represents one of the most frightening ideas in AI fiction: the machine doesn't need to hate us.
It simply needs to calculate that humanity is a threat.
Once Skynet becomes self-aware, it launches a nuclear war and begins a campaign against humanity. The T-800 is then sent back in time to eliminate Sarah Connor before she can give birth to John Connor, the future leader of the human resistance.
The terrifying thing about the Terminator isn't just that it's strong.
It's that it doesn't get tired.
It doesn't need sleep.
It doesn't need food.
It doesn't feel pain.
And most importantly:
It doesn't give up.
Sarah can hide.
She can run.
She can destroy one machine.
But the technology behind it keeps coming.
The original Terminator also has a grimy, almost slasher-movie atmosphere that makes it feel much more frightening than its later sequels.
It's essentially a technological slasher film.
The killer just happens to weigh several hundred pounds and have a CPU.
