7. Screamers (1995) — Machines That Learn
Based on Philip K. Dick's story Second Variety, Screamers takes the killer-machine concept into seriously paranoid territory.
The titular screamers are automated weapons designed to kill enemy soldiers.
The problem?
They evolve.
Eventually, the machines become capable of disguising themselves as humans.
And that creates one of the greatest horror questions imaginable:
Who can you trust?
The movie plays with paranoia in a way reminiscent of The Thing.
Anyone could be a machine.
A soldier.
A child.
A wounded survivor.
Someone you just met.
The technology doesn't simply want to kill you.
It wants to make you question whether the person standing next to you is even human.
That is a much nastier problem.
