8. The Matrix (1999) — The Machines Win

The Matrix is usually categorized as science fiction, action and cyberpunk.

But underneath all the leather coats and spectacular gunfights is an absolutely horrifying premise.

Humanity lost.

The machines won.

And most humans don't even know it.

People are kept inside an artificial reality while machines use their bodies as an energy source.

That's horrifying enough.

Then there are the Agents.

Artificial programs capable of taking over human bodies and hunting down anyone who threatens the system.

Agent Smith in particular becomes one of cinema's great AI villains.

He doesn't just want to defeat Neo.

He wants to destroy the entire system—or eventually escape it.

The genius of The Matrix is that the horror isn't immediately obvious.

At first, the world looks normal.

Everything seems fine.

Then you discover that everything is a lie.

Suddenly your morning commute doesn't seem so bad.
