9. M3GAN (2022) — The Killer Robot Child
Eventually, evil AI had to become a creepy robot child.
Enter M3GAN.
Designed to be the ultimate companion for children, M3GAN is supposed to protect, entertain and emotionally support her young owner.
Unfortunately, her programming takes the whole "protect the child" thing a little too seriously.
And once M3GAN decides that certain humans are threats, she becomes remarkably creative about dealing with them.
M3GAN works because it combines several classic horror concepts:
- creepy dolls
- killer robots
- artificial intelligence
- technological paranoia
- children in danger
- and the terrifying idea that parents might trust a machine more than they trust themselves
It also understands something important about modern technology:
People don't just want machines to perform tasks anymore.
They want machines to be companions.
Friends.
Caregivers.
That makes M3GAN considerably more unsettling than a random killer robot.
She doesn't simply invade your house.
You invite her in.
