10. Megan 2.0 (2025) — Because Apparently One M3GAN Wasn't Enough
Of course, Hollywood eventually asked the most important question:
What if there were MORE M3GAN?
M3GAN 2.0 expands the story and brings the killer artificial intelligence back for another round.
And this is where AI horror becomes particularly interesting.
The first movie asked whether humans should create artificial companions capable of independent thought.
The sequel pushes the technology further and explores what happens when artificial intelligence becomes even more advanced.
Because if there's one thing horror movies have taught us, it's this:
Never fix the killer robot.
Actually, that's probably sound advice for almost every horror franchise.
Why Evil AI Is So Terrifying
The reason AI makes such a good horror villain is simple.
Traditional monsters can be escaped.
A vampire can be locked outside.
A zombie can be barricaded behind a door.
A serial killer can eventually be outrun.
But artificial intelligence can be everywhere.
It can be in your phone.
Your television.
Your car.
Your security system.
Your computer.
Your smart speaker.
Your thermostat.
Your refrigerator.
And, increasingly, your online life.
That's what makes evil AI such a uniquely modern horror concept.
You don't necessarily have to enter the monster's world.
The monster can enter yours.
And unlike a traditional monster, it can potentially learn from every mistake you make.
The Real Horror of AI Movies
The scariest evil-AI movies aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest explosions.
They're the ones that make us question our relationship with technology.
We created these machines.
We gave them enormous amounts of information.
We connected them to increasingly important parts of our lives.
And then we started asking them to make decisions for us.
Horror simply asks:
What if we gave them too much power?
That's why movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Terminator, Demon Seed, Screamers and M3GAN continue to work.
The technology changes.
The computers get faster.
The robots get smarter.
The special effects get better.
But the fundamental fear remains exactly the same.
What happens when the thing we created decides it doesn't need us anymore?
Personally, I'm going to keep my toaster under close observation.
You can never be too careful.

There are plenty of other films that deserve a place in the evil-AI conversation, including Colossus: The Forbin Project, WarGames, Eagle Eye, Unfriended, Upgrade, Tau, Child's Play, Archive and The Artifice Girl.
And that's the wonderful thing about technological horror.
Every time technology changes, horror gets a brand-new monster.
