A Future Full of Jaws [Gore 4]

This time, it’s really, really personal.

It was 30 years ago today, on October 21, 2015, that Marty McFly traveled to the future for the first time in Back to the Future II. Among the many futuristic developments were hoverboards, news drones, video glasses, the Cubs finally winning the World Series and a theater marquee for Jaws 19 that comes to life in holographic form. While many of these predictions have actually come true (and the Cubs, at the time of this posting, are in the N.L. Championship Series, although down 3 games to 0 to the NY Mets), we’ve fallen terribly behind in coming up with sequels to Jaws, having only gotten as far as #4, Jaws: The Revenge. However, in an alternate, and awesome, universe, maybe we have been fed a steady diet of killer shark movies on a continuing basis. Thanks to Universal, we can see what we may have missed.

Chapter 1, Parasitology 101 [Bikini Warrior Zombie]

Her name was Bambi. She was a mid-western white girl, not burdened with an abundance of education, yet opinionated as only the daughter of a lapsed Pentecostal minister can be. She was two weeks absent from her waitressing gig back home, and had spent the last of her money getting down-island. The two-piece knock-off that barely covered Bambi’s boobs and caboose was the last of Bambi’s earthly possessions. It would be the last thing anyone ever saw of the pretty Chicago brunette.

The Spawning [British Horror Revival]

Intense, dark, Freudian sci-fi/horror feature with an unavoidable Xtro feel. When three-months-pregnant Amy is rescued from an attempted rape, she unwisely invites her saviour home – but we know from an effective prologue that he’s actually a humanoid alien. Amy is drugged and raped by this being, but police, doctors and cheating boyfriend only believe she was assaulted once. By the end of the film four people are dead and Amy has given birth to a slug which is eaten by a spider-monster under her bed. Excellent acting by the whole cast combines with well-crafted, naturalistic dialogue plus tight, shallow camerawork and very gooey effects to create a powerful, disturbing, serious drama with few answers. Frustratingly, like too many titles in my books, The Spawning is a lost film. Shot in 2016 around Cheshire and Merseyside, it premiered in New York in 2017 and was released VOD in March 2018. But by 2020 Riley had moved abroad and his only feature had disappeared from Vimeo, becoming no more available to watch than London After Midnight…

The Intensity of Frenzy (1972) [Classic Monsters]

Frenzy is, in my humble opinion, Hitchcock’s most intense and disturbing film. Because it was made long after the production code had folded, it has all the graphic imagery that the 1970s, with its lack of overarching censorship, would allow. And so all the things that Hitchcock could not show in the past, all the things he could not do due to studios deciding star personas, are made possible.
